From Temple to San Antonio, a 150-Mile Data Center Corridor Is Outpacing Oversight

More than 70 facilities span six Central Texas jurisdictions. Each sets its own rules — or none — for an industry straining a shared regional water and power grid.

A wave of data center construction is reshaping a 150-mile stretch of Central Texas from Temple to San Antonio. Facilities are operating or planned across at least six separate jurisdictions — including Austin, Round Rock, Taylor, and Caldwell County — each setting its own rules, or none at all, for an industry that draws heavily on shared regional water and power systems. Austin's city manager has until July to recommend new policy, making the corridor's existing footprint the essential backdrop for that decision.
